Lead Teaching Parent - Methodist Family Health (Location: Magnolia)

Summary:

Under the direction of the Program Consultant, the Lead Teaching Parent provides the day-to-day care and guidance of assigned youths in a residential care setting. The LTP lives in the home while on duty and while on-call (overnights). This position supervises all other direct care staff in the assigned Group Home.

Responsibilities:

Teaches youth a curriculum of skills in social, self-help, independent living, maintenance and academic areas and provides moral, spiritual and physical training and guidance to the youth assigned to their home.

Primary on-site contact with the community for the group home. Assists in the communication of the Home’s philosophy and programs to individuals and groups, agencies and the “community at large” within a service area. Provides or coordinates academic assistance to youths and works closely with the public-school system.

Provides coverage and program continuity of the youth home as specified in the youth home staff scheduling procedures including overnight stays. The LTP must be available and ready to respond when on-call if events within the home should require them to come on duty, and/or the clients require direct supervision or interaction.

Supervises Teaching-Parent and Alternate Teaching-Parent(s) who provide program continuity while working with the LTP and during the LTPs time off duty. Responsible for planning and coordinating staff schedule, including coverage of PTO and sick hours for the team. Has input on hiring and termination decisions.  Has input on disciplinary actions. Required to provide feedback for TP & ATP(s) annual evaluations.

Responsible for the equitable division of work assignments/tasks for home operations and documentation for all Group Home staff.

With other staff members, provides counseling, concern, direction, assistance and support that would normally be received from a parent. Coordinates medical, dental, vision, psychological, psychiatric and legal appointments for all youth(s) in the home.

Coordinates with other staff in the implementation of an individualized plan of care for each youth.

Facilitates the process of observed self-medication administration for clients. Manages appropriate storage of medications.

Remains informed about local, state and federal standards and regulations pertaining to the provision of services to children and their families.

Works closely with the youth’s parents, teachers, social workers, the court and significant others to ensure the definition and implementation of a proper and effective program of youth care to assist each youth in achieving to his/her maximum potential.

Works closely with the other Group Home staff and the Program Consultant to ensure efficient home coverage and mutually satisfying working relationships.

In coordination with the other Group Home staff, expends money for youth home operation. Maintains fiscal records as directed and in accordance with sound business practice. Oversees tracking of documentation of expenditures for the team, including compliance with budget.

Works with the other Group Home staff in providing the following functions: admission of children to the home, residential services for the children and their families, discharge of children from the home maintenance of case records.

Establishes and maintains contact with program referral sources by making personal visits and other contacts to agencies and others within a service area.

Assists with preparation for home licensure. Is knowledgeable of and maintains compliance with all licensing standards.

Knowledgeable of the Teaching Family Model. Takes advantage of professional growth opportunities and works to achieve or maintain Teaching-Parent certification status.  Assists team members in achieving certification status and providing feedback for annual certification.

Works closely with the other Group Home staff and their supervisor/consultant to develop and implement all areas of care to the youth in the home. Seeks consultation and provides detailed information regarding all significant issues affecting youth in care.

Cooperates in scheduling consultation/supervision visits to the home. Seeks out, responds positively to and implements suggestions and feedback from supervisors.

Maintains a high level of professionalism when interacting with clients, families, guardians, organizations and individuals who visit or have business with MCH/MFH and members of the community. An approach of providing pleasant and effective customer service will be a priority in all interactions with others while on duty and/or at the home. 

Provides and maintains requested information and program records. 

Responsible for maintaining appearance, cleanliness and coordination of maintenance of the home and grounds. 

Performs as directed related duties as needed in coordination with other group Home staff or home supervisor/consultant.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in human services or education field preferred. Experience working with children or other population with special needs preferred.

Experience working with children or other population with special needs preferred.

The ability to take advantage of extensive training and to apply that training to the implementation of a comprehensive program of care for children.

Must be physically capable of restraining youth if said youth are a danger to themselves or others.

Must be physically capable and willing to teach and assist youth in maintenance activities occurring in and around the youth home. Activities include, but are not limited to: Yard Care, Interior Cleaning, Vehicle Cleaning and Maintenance.

Possess or able to obtain a valid Arkansas Driver’s License and is insurable to operate company vehicles.

Maintains mandatory employee requirements as needed.

Must have good auditory, visual and olfactory ability.

Requires the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time and intermittently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach with hands and arms.

Lift and hold at least 50 pounds for one minute.

Use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.

Must be able to maintain effective audio, visual and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating office equipment and other treatment equipment.

Flu shot is mandatory and required for all positions (subject only to qualified exemptions).

Scheduling:

The Lead Teaching Parent position is a salaried, exempt status position.  As the first line supervisor for the home the LTP is primarily responsible for coverage and operational responsibilities. If other staff members are absent from the home due to emergency or employee turnover, the LTP will assume all responsibilities related to the operation of the Group Home on a continual basis with assistance from other Group Home staff as available and the Program Consultant/Supervisor.  Every effort will be made to keep such occurrences to a minimum and to provide assistance and relieve staff, allowing the LTP time off.
